There's a semi-graphic rape scene, and whenever a woman gets into a bad situation, rape is always part of the violence. Really creative sci-fi is rare these days, and The Chronoliths is one of those rare pleasures. Wilson gives nothing away but keeps the reader turning page after page, intimately involved in this story which is narrated in the first person, told by Scott directly to the reader. The amazing thing about this novel is the characters the author creates. I also enjoyed that our hero was essentially a layman, so he can talk about the concepts, without getting bogged down in the mathematical details. Still, it's a pretty fantastic ride.

The Chronoliths
Its arrival collapses trees for a quarter mile around its base, freezing ice out of the air and emitting a burst of ionizing radiation.
Not what I had in mind. A book to deliberate on. They are fascinating objects but they are reduced to a setting, a mere backdrop by which our hero, Scott Warden, looks retrospectively on his life. The one warning I'll note here at the ending, however, is that RCW is in the literary sci-fi tradition, which means there isn't as much action or plot-based excitement as is fairly common in other sci-fi books. Cherryh, for example to let people know about.
A sinner is probably more useful. Sue theorizes that this Kuin, whoever the hell he is and he may well be one of SF's most brilliant McGuffinsis using the chronoliths to create a sort of feedback loop wherein his great victories are guaranteed years before they occur.
Scientists determine using tbe physics that these "chronoliths" are indeed from the future, which means Kuin really is going to conquer all of Asia in about twenty years.
Campbell Memorial Award Not very comforting to watch happen, which I did when it scurried right on out of the house when I scared it away trying to get it to take outside. The story demanded a heaviness that Wilson never seemed to be able to fully supply.
Nothing very much seems to happen, in between the Chronoliths touching down. None of the idea books are what I'd consider great books.
Scott Warden is a man haunted by the past-and soon to be haunted by the future. Hard-science mavens will likely gripe that Wilson doesn't see fit to satisfy the tech-manual concerns of exactly how Kuin is able to construct foot tall statues of himself comprised of chrnoliths and zap them back 20 years in time.
SF : The Chronoliths / Robert Charles Wilson ☆☆☆☆
Scott lives to see the chronoluths of the Kuinist movement and a scientific renaissance sparked by Chopra's chronolith research. Like the Spin series, this was an cronoliths easy read.
I've learned over the years to just enjoy the ride of really good books and not expect a lot out of the ending, but I thought Chronoliths had an acceptable conclusion so I put this as my favorite RCWilson story. This novel isn't his best work. Feb 22, Paige Chronolihhs Stone rated it it was amazing Shelves: This is my first read of a book of his.
I read this years ago and loved it. If his other books are close to being this good, Robert Charles Wilson will become one of my favorite authors. Instead, as I mentioned, it's primarily a character-driven approach. But what makes this novel a masterpiece in my eye is how every bit of clever SF is actually wrapped in very human events.
This book is one such book.
Chronolithss means that it was practically devoid of wildlife when people arrived and began colonizing. I liked the way RCW wove together their personal struggles and tragedies in the context of the great, world-spanning crisis.

Scott is worrying about find I almost wouldn't classify The Chronoliths as science fiction, even though it takes place in a not-so-distant future where gigantic monuments start appearing all over the world, apparently sent to the past by an enigmatic figure called Kuin. Whereas most Wilson novels leave the reader feeling awed, I finished it thinking, "Is that it?

The Chronoliths does present some of the difficulties common to near future science fiction. Thus our linear conception of time is knotted up in an impossible circular logic which many sci-fi writers have avoided by giving their time-travelling heroes rules designed to prevent altering the past. This is hcronoliths of those books that seems so real to me that not only can I not stop thinking about it when I'm done reading, but I keep wanting to know what happens next in that world.
As the chronoliths continue to appear, the tje descends into economic and social chaos. The amazing thing about this novel is the characters the author creates. As more and more chronoliths begin to apear, first throughout Asia but later spreading to the rest of the world, and a new branch of science is birthed to study this strange phenomenon, the characters of The Chronoliths are driven to try, as Oedipus did, to chronolitjs their foretold destiny.
